I don’t normally get all political on this blog, but something just pissed me right the fuck off and I have to say something.
The Florida legislature just passed a measure requiring women who want an abortion to pay for an ultrasound if they are in their 1st trimester. Go read this article. Now, personally, I could neve have an abortion, but I strongly believe in a woman’s right to choose what she does with her own body. Forcing women to pay for an ultrasound before providing a LEGAL service is asshattery!
The decision to have an abortion is hard enough. Don’t add assinine, expensive requirements. Whether the bible-thumping religious right like it or not, ABORTION IS LEGAL. Attempting to regulate it to death isn’t going to make it any less legal. As an attempt to be a little less douchy, they put in a stipulation that the woman does not have to view the ultrasound images on the screen. However, in order to not have to view it, they must sign a form AND the the doctor/nurse/ultrasound tech who is performing the ultrasound are ordered to, “describe the images on the sonogram and the stage of fetal development.”
So, what they’re saying is we don’t like the choice you’ve made. So to make a difficult situation that much more difficult, we’re going to make you pay hundreds of additional dollars on an ultrasound. Now, you don’t have to look at the ultrasound, but we’re going to describe it to you anyway. We know what you’re doing is perfectly legal, but we’re going to make it as difficult for you as possible.
This measure is now on Governer Charlie Crist’s desk for signature or veto. Crist has proven what a douchecanoe he is lately too. He’s flip flopped on issues and now has denounced his party because he realizes he’ll never win the republican primary for his senate race. I can only hope he makes the last nail in his political coffin the veto of this bill.
While I strongly oppose abortion and believe that it is murder, I also oppose this bill. Although I disagree with abortion being legal, it is legal. There’s no reason to harass these women into having to pay for an ultrasound. Now, I’m not opposed to cutting any and all federal funding for abortions but that’s not what this bill does. You can stand on principle without bullying people that make a decision you disagree with.

Horrible. How is that fair? Women in these situations are usually already having conflicted feelings. How is it right to inflict such emotional damage on them???
